Ortovox packs at home in Calgary Zone

For many years, the CSP Calgary Zone has relied on Ortovox packs to enhance the efficiency and safety of its operations. These packs are renowned for their durability, functionality, and innovative design, making them an ideal choice for ski patrollers who often work in challenging and unpredictable conditions. Calgary Zone recently purchased 36 additional Ortovox Haute Route (black) packs in 30S, 32, 38S, and 40-litre sizes.

The history of CSP and Ortovox

Ortovox was leaps ahead of its time with its custom pack design, according to Calgary Zone VP of Operations Gordon Merz. The pack featured a cross zip-off, allowing it to be used even when not patrolling, and a fully adjustable shoulder harness to accommodate different body heights and widths. Gordon still uses an old blue pack for family ski trips, noting that it has never needed repair.

Calgary Zone has been using Ortovox packs since around 2002, when they transitioned from a local Powder Design pack. Ortovox’s first pack was made in 1985, and the custom CSP (then CSPS) pack was based on this design. Over the years, it is estimated that Calgary Zone has used more than 400 packs, with the zone’s membership peaking at 250 members and currently around 160. These packs are widely used by all members for both winter and summer events. Nakiska Ski Resort paid patrol staff also used these packs for several years, supplying them to their patrollers.

Ortovox was founded in 1980 and is dedicated to protecting the mountains and the athletes who explore them with a mantra that the alpine world is our sanctuary, a source of energy and inspiration. Ortovox believes that if anyone is responsible for safeguarding this environment, it is us. This commitment drives them to produce fair and sustainable products, working alongside the mountain sports community to protect what we all cherish.

Current models and features

Calgary Zone primarily uses the Ortovox Haute Route 32 pack, and since the CSP rebranded to red, white and black eight years ago, it has adopted various sizes to better fit the needs of its members:

Haute Route 32 – alpine default.

Haute Route 30S – alpine – smaller stature.

Haute Route 40 – new Nordic default.

Haute Route 38S – new Nordic – smaller stature.

The packs have evolved in colour over the years, but a dark gray/charcoal/black option has always been available. Crosses are sourced from various locations, with the latest batch coming from the CSP estore and sewn on by a local shop.

Compelling features

Gordon highlights several features that make Ortovox packs a favourite among patrollers:

  1. Quality and durability: The packs are built to last, with many patrollers using them for years without needing repairs.
  2. Accessibility: Dual access points (top and harness side) allow quick retrieval of equipment.
  3. Fit and comfort: The packs fit well and are not bulky, coming in a range of sizes to suit different body types.
  4. Water repellency: The packs repel water effectively, keeping gear dry.
  5. Backcountry accessories: They come with all the necessary accessories, including pole and ski carriers, and a compartment for avalanche gear.

Most patrollers keep their first aid kit in a MEC first aid bag, which fits well in Ortovox packs. The packs also feature compartments for various tools and equipment, enhancing their utility in different scenarios.

Ease of business

Gordon praises the ease of working with Ortovox, noting the quick and efficient ordering process. Through the CSP pro deals team, Gordon was able to contact Ortovox, place an order and receive the product within a week. The availability of stock and the ability to view the packs at various retailers also contribute to the positive experience.

By leveraging the advanced design and functionality of Ortovox packs, the CSP Calgary Zone supports its commitment to safety and excellence in mountain rescue operations.

The combination of these features ensures that Calgary Zone patrollers are well-equipped to handle any situation they encounter on the slopes.
