Head Skis has roots reaching back to 1947 when company founder Howard Head started to develop the world’s first metal ski, eventually settling on a sandwich design with a marine plywood core inside two layers of aluminum, with imbedded carbon steel edges and a phenolic plastic base.

Head, then in the aviation manufacturing business, became obsessed with perfecting a new kind of ski after being introduced to skiing and finding the equipment then available to be lacking. At the time, skis were built of hickory, a heavy material that does not retain its camber over time.

Head’s invention revolutionized ski manufacturing and lifted performance. His inaugural Head Standard ski model (nicknamed “The Cheater” for the ability it gave beginners) was the first modern downhill ski, light, longitudinally soft but very stiff in torsion, allowing for easy turning while holding an edge better than anything before it.

The company has continued to innovate, to vastly expand its product line, and along the way became one of the CSP’s longest-running ski pro deal providers. Its ski and ski boot innovations include the EMC, the world’s only electronic ski dampening system; Liquid Fit, a ski boot fitting system; graphene and carbon fibre in skis and boots; and a lightweight design regime called Lyt Tech.

(Head has also become a force in equipment for racquet sports including tennis, pickleball, squash and padel, as well as helmets, goggles, sportswear and bags for skiing and snowboarding.)

Currently, the company’s ski and snowboard lines include the Rebel collection for racers, the Supershape line for performance skiing, the Kore line for all mountain, the Joy line for women, the Crux line for touring, and the Oblivion line for freestyle. Snowboards include the Lyt line, Gamechanger, and Lifeline.

For 2024-2025, Head has completely revamped its Supershape collection with a brand new look and feel surrounding changed construction (including Crossforce carbon fibre), sidecut and plate (the Better Balance PR base).
