An ombudsman (or ombudsperson) is charged with representing the interests of the membership by investigating and addressing complaints related to the administration of the Calgary Zone. In short, an ombudsperson’s job is to help you navigate a difficult situation that you may not be able to handle on your own. Your ombudsperson can:

  • help you to resolve a situation where a power imbalance complicates communication
  • guide you through the rules and systems that govern the Canadian Ski Patrol
  • coach you to help develop conflict resolution skills of your own

Remember: a key feature of an ombudsperson is the ability to act independently and impartially. Interactions with an ombudsperson are always confidential.

For many of you, this may be the first time you’re hearing about that this role. Indeed, very few patrollers (on average, less than one per year) make use of the ombudsmen to help resolve their complaints. If you think you might need a helping hand with your situation, or if it may require investigation to resolve, don’t hesitate to reach out to Howard and Elizabeth!
